[ About CQ-PAN ]
User Meeting Procedure:
Read through the policy documentation with the users.
Notice: Web accounts are restriced to NEW cq-pan username style accounts only
so that we can maintain some consistency in the username structure.
Notice: For the moment all files must be copied as the one directory. No
subdirectories until the script has been fixed.
How to get started:
World Wide Web clients (ie netscape) use the .HTML format (Hypertext Markup
Language). When you retrieve a file in netscape (or a similar browser), all it
does is download the text document from the location you specified and
interprets the commands in the file.
To get started you should have a look at the web development page.
Web Administration Page/ Web Development Page:
There is a web development page on cq-pan at the url
http://cq-pan/web_dev/web_dev.html which has a list of links for web
publishing, it also has a link to the web administration page.
You must have a web account and password to be able to access the web
administration page.
The admin page lets you - add a 'hits' counter
- update your page (copied from your web dir)
- view the inline picture library on cq-pan
- copy your homepage and pics back to your web dir.
(not yet implemented)
- change your web account password
(not yet implemented)
User Quotas:
Users will be allocated a quota of 3 Meg and will be allowed to overdraw
their quota temporarily up to 5.5 Meg. You will be informed by mail if your
account is overdrawn. (If your pages are particularly good and require more
space then you can negotiate with the web team for more space).
Drive access:
Each cq-pan user has a web directory under their work directory which can
be accessed from the itlabs in dos by typing:
net use drive: \\cq-pan\username *
eg net use f: \\cq-pan\smithd1 *
This command will connect a logical drive which points to the directory in
your cq-pan account. You can then copy your .html and picture files from
disk to your account by copying them to that drive.
You must disconnect your account drive (or turn the computer off) before
leaving the computer. the syntax is.
net use f: /d
Homepage updating:
Once you have your documents inside your web directory your hompage can't
yet be seen on the web. You must press the 'Update web account on cq-pan'
link on the web administration page, which will then copy all of your files
to the appropriate place and make the necessary conversions within the
files. The link to the admin page can be found on:
http://cq-pan/web_dev/web_dev.html
After the files have been copied the contents of the
users web directory will be deleted.
(It is recommended that users keep a backup of their hompage in the event
that your data is lost).
Homepage refrencing:
A user can view their hompage on the cq-pan server by the following url
syntax:
http://cq-pan.cqu.edu.au/current/student/username/
eg http://cq-pan.cqu.edu.au/current/student/smithd1/
You actual main page MUST be called 'index.html' otherwise cq-pan's server
will not be able to find your homepage.
Image refrencing:
You may name your pictures in any way you wish but you must make all
refrences inside of a .html document in "LOWERCASE". This is to make
cq-pan's conversion within documents work correctly.
eg < img src = "/pics/big-dot.gif" >
You may make a directory in your account to separate pictures from documents
but if you do you MUST NOT call the directory "pics". This is to avoid
confusion when converting the document.
We also ask users to use the cq-pan indexed pictures library wherever
possible to prevent too much wastage of file space. The indexed pictures
library is linked from the administration page.
Filenames:
Because of the filename limit by dos when you name your html files in dos you
can only save them as .htm this is converted by the system when it's copied
to your hompage directory. Files such as gifs and jpegs will require a .gif
and .jpg file extension respectively. We would also prefer that filenames
don't contain space characters. (This request is more directed to macintosh
users who may often use spaces in filenames).
Recommendations to users:
It's recommended that you don't include large picture files on your
homepage. If you must have large pictures, you should make a link that points
to the picture, and warn that the link points to a large picture. This
is just being considerate to modem users and people on slow net connections.
Web Help:
You can get help with any system problems (ie strange errors or
misfunctional operations) by mailing the webmaster@cq-pan.cqu.edu.au.
Questions about writing .html code will probably be ignored. For .html
specific problems it is best to consult the links provided on the web
development page.
Changing your web password:
You can't as yet change your web password but it will be added to the
web administration page in the future.
More Information:
For more information e-mail to webmaster@cq-pan.cqu.edu.au or read the
documentation provided on the cq-pan pages.
Competition:
Having a new web account automatically includes you in the current cq-pan
homepage compeition. All cq-pan user homepages will be judged on the 30th
of October, the winner recieving prizes donated by local businesses and
organisations.
It criteria for judging has been based according to artistic content,
technical merits and the number of votes it has acquired from fellow
students and people outside the university. The judges include two
impartial members of the public and members of the web team.

page.
You may request to be removed from the competition if you do not wish to be
involved.
