Increasingly there is disquiet about the nature and role of learning management systems (LMSes, also known as VLEs, CMSes etc). For example.

My work on Webfuse is meant to address some of these problems and theoretically (hopefully) there might be something different and of interest to others.

Summary of thought shortcomings of current work include:

  • All product and almost no process
Common evaluations of LMSes are almost entirely focussed on comparing the features of the different systems. Evaluations by different Universities might include how well the technology used by the LMS fits with the institutions technology

The problem with this is that this view doesn't factor in any view of the institution wanting to change its approach to online learning. It doesn't allow for emergence or growth.

Common solution at the moment is to use an open source LMS. Theory being it is more changeable.

  • teleological not ateleological
When process is thought of it is teleological
  • Focus on a particular type of education
