RCOS is
- a computer aided learning tool that animates the operation of a multi-tasking operating system,
- a "real" operating system that will execute programs,
- object-oriented and based on message passing kernel which enables different components to be replaced easily,
- written in C++ and designed using a platform abstraction layer that simplifies porting to new platforms.
RCOS exists due to the efforts of Ron Chernich. Ron created RCOS during his undergraduate and honours year projects. Without Ron this wonderful resource would not exist.
RCOS designed primarily to run on the MS-DOS platform and its capabilities were limited because of the power of that platform. In 1996 RCOS was joined by RCOS.java, a redesigned RCOS intended to make full use of the capabilities offered by Sun's Java programming language.
A number of papers have been written describing both RCOS and RCOS.java. They provide a more detailed explanation of both systems.
